April 24, 2024, Los Angeles, CA – The Center for American Liberty(CAL) filed a lawsuit against the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) for its failure to comply with California’s Public Records Act (CPRA). The lawsuit highlights PUSD’s lack of transparency by failing to disclose public records regarding controversial curriculum discussing gender identity, Critical Race Theory, and other subjects, as well as school district spending and contractors.

“In today’s culture of secrecy in schools, transparency is not merely a request, but a requirement for protecting parental rights and ensuring government accountability,” Harmeet Dhillon, CEO and Founder of the Center for American Liberty, said. “Our comprehensive request aims to ensure that Pasadena Unified School District adheres to its obligations under the law and remains accountable to the students, parents, and community it serves. We are committed to securing a transparent review of the District’s practices to safeguard the educational rights and well-being of our children.”
The lawsuit stems from multiple instances where PUSD failed to provide requested documents within the mandated timeframe or at all. Like CAL’s recent lawsuit against Los Angeles Unified School District (the largest school district in the country), PUSD repeatedly fell short of its legal obligations under the CPRA.
