Center for American Liberty v. Los Angeles Unified School District

What is the Los Angeles United School District hiding?

The Center for American Liberty tried to find out—but the school district is illegally stonewalling us.

In 2022, the Center for American Liberty sent the Los Angeles United School District (LAUSD) a records request, pursuant to the California Public Records Act, for (1) curriculum and other documents related to a variety of controversial topics like Critical Race Theory, transgender ideology, and Marxism, and (2) for certain financial records related to LAUSD’s expenditure of CARES Act and American Rescue Plan Act funds. Our goal was simple, transparency—to give parents greater insight into what LAUSD school officials are teaching their children.

Nearly two years later, the LAUSD has given us almost nothing.

This is illegal. As a public agency, the LAUSD is required to comply with the California Public Records Act (CPRA) which gives Americans the right to access public information like curricula and other learning materials.

The LAUSD has failed to provide these documents within the mandated timeframe, using underhanded delay tactics to evade our good faith requests.

This lawsuit is not just about obtaining documents; it’s about upholding the public’s right to access critical information. The agencies that our tax dollars fund must be accountable for their actions.

That’s why we’re asking a court to compel LAUSD to fulfill its obligations under the CPRA and to turn over the responsive documents it’s hiding.

The public shouldn’t have to take government agencies to court to achieve transparency. We won’t stand idly by and allow the LAUSD to continue to deny parents access to critical information about their kids’ education.

Join us as we stand for government transparency!
