The Center for American Liberty (CAL) has filed lawsuits against Greenfield Union, Gonzales Unified, and Pajaro Valley Unified School Districts to enforce public transparency and protect parental rights. CAL requested public records under the California Public Records Act, including curriculum materials, teacher training, gender support plans, and compliance with Supreme Court rulings such as Mahmoud v. Taylor, which affirms parents’ rights to review and opt out of instruction. Despite repeated requests, the districts have failed to provide these records within the legal deadlines.
The records sought cover a broad range of issues, including pupil record policies, district guidance on gender transition plans, communications with third-party organizations such as ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Trevor Project, GLSEN, and Gender Spectrum, and documents related to federal executive orders on radical indoctrination and gender ideology. CAL also requested information on how the districts calculate reproduction costs for public records and how they implement curriculum and equity programs, including social-emotional learning, ethnic studies, and other supplemental instruction.
The lawsuits seek writs of mandate, declaratory relief, and injunctive relief to compel the districts to conduct thorough searches for responsive records, disclose non-exempt materials, and ensure trustees and employees search private devices for responsive documents.
Mark Trammell, CAL’s CEO, said, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Parents have a right to know how schools are educating their children and implementing controversial policies.” CAL will continue to provide updates as these cases progress.
