Job Summary: Reporting to and working closely with the Vice President of Litigation, the Attorney is responsible for supporting litigation and amicus efforts at all stages, including intake of new cases; counseling clients; legal research; drafting demand letters, complaints, motions, and other litigation documents; reviewing documents produced in discovery; and drafting appellate documents and amicus briefs. Top applicants will have judicial clerkship experience, superior writing skills, and litigation experience.
The Attorney can work from a virtual office anywhere in the US. The Center also has a Vero Beach, FL office should the Attorney wish to work in-office. The Attorney is a full-time, permanent position.
Job Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Intake of new potential cases
- Manage relationships and communication with clients
- Professionally handle confidential information
- Research novel areas of law
- Develop legal strategies that advance clients’ interests
- Engage in all aspects of discovery, from written discovery requests to depositions
- Draft, edit, and review litigation documents, including trial court motions and appeals
- Oral argument on motions and appeals
- Draft amicus briefs and coordinate filing
Requirements
- J.D. from ABA-accredited law school
- Active law license in any U.S. state in good standing
- 1+ years of litigation experience preferred, but we will also consider clerkship experience
- Endorses and is motivated by CAL’s mission
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with an ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to work hard and desire to produce superior work
- Creative and quick thinking
- Exceptional analytical and writing ability
- Federal judicial clerkship experience preferred but not required
- Experience litigating First Amendment and constitutional cases preferred but not required
Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. CAL offers a generous benefits package, including up to 100% reimbursement (depending on the employee’s individual circumstances) of health and dental insurance premiums and a 401(k) with a 3% match.
